Cohort Profile Tool
The Cohort Profile Tool is one of the exciting new CETL tools currently in development. This tool gives staff secure access to reports about current students' learning patterns in the online classroom.
The Cohort Profile Tool has three separate areas:
- Student profiling
Provides comparative profile information about students by analysing current and recent student cohorts - for example number of students, accessibility issues. This information will alert staff to changes in the student groups that they teach and suggest appropriate adjustments/adaptations along with links to supporting resources.
Module
activity
Provides reports about what Virtual Learning Environment tools and resources students have used most frequently - for example, how often they've used the chat or discussion tools. It also identifies student usage trends allowing the comparison of current patterns of learning with that of previous years.
- Teaching resources
Provides contextual links to support resources to help when preparing online materials - examples of best practice, notes and advice for staff.
Benefits for Teaching and Learning
This tool has a range of potential uses for teaching staff:
- It lets them see patterns of online usage - what tools students are using most and least;
- They can reflect on patterns of how students are learning, and what is working best for them;
- They can view helpful resources if they are unfamiliar with a particular area (e.g. online quizzes);
- They can ensure a consistent experience for a student throughout university, by comparing their online learning
experience with that of previous years.
The Cohort Profile Tool is currently in development, and will shortly be demonstrated to focus groups in the
University in order to develop a full working version.
